With the help of INFORM's Terminal Operating System, the terminal operator ICO was able to realize its expansion plans and increase its overall efficiency by 5 percent.
The turnover figures of the Belgian company, International Car Operator (ICO), are constantly increasing. In the meantime, the terminal operator now handles more than two million vehicles a year at the yards in Antwerp and Zeebrugge. In 2015, it was 1.6 million. In order to cope with this turnover, ICO buys additional terminal space and also relies on intelligent planning and controlling of operational processes.
As the amount of vehicle turnover continues to rise, the complexity of planning and operational processes at the ICO terminals in Zeebrugge and Antwerp also increases. Without an intelligent terminal operating system (TOS), ICO would not have been able to cope with the increasing volume of work. The company uses INFORM's software for vehicle logistics as a TOS. The intelligent optimization software for the automotive industry helps yard operators to optimize the planning of vehicle movements, parking spaces and technical modifications of vehicles on the car terminal. The control of incoming cars by truck, rail and ship is automated, therefore saving costs and time during loading and unloading as well as storage and processing. Taking into account numerous parameters such as destination, delivery date and priority, the best possible parking space for each vehicle is determined in real time. The system's features, such as the automated eGate portal for truck drivers, also relieve the workload of employees and ensure faster transit times and less staffing requirements at the terminals. For example, the average time of a truck on the terminal could be reduced by 50 percent. Overall, efficiency was improved by 5 percent.
“Thanks to the TOS system from Inform, our workflow efficiencies and costs are streamlined beyond our expectations.” Alain Guillemyn, Manager of purchasing & IT, ICO NV
At the beginning of October, many stakeholders could see these benefits for themselves during a visit to the terminal at Zeebrugge. The international visitors from Chile, the Netherlands, the USA, the UK, Finland, Spain and Austria were able to experience the software live and learn more about its advantages in practical demonstrations.
In addition to increasing the productivity of the terminal, ICO benefits from the TOS, which provides a complete overview of the processes and status of each individual vehicle. Manufacturers and dealers can also access real-time information on where a vehicle is located inside the terminal or technical center via a web portal.
