Salzgitter Flachstahl:
Three Decades of Intelligent intralostics management

As part of Salzgitter AG, Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH supplies customers in the automotive, construction and mechanical engineering industries with several million tons of steel every year. Behind this performance lies a highly complex inplant logistics operation: every month, thousands of internal transports have to be coordinated – from time-critical production samples and liquid hazardous materials to coil transports with a total weight of up to 160 tons. To control these material flows efficiently, transparently and reliably, Salzgitter Flachstahl has relied on the SYNCROTESS intralogistics management system since 1994.

the Highlights

30 Years of Intelligent Control

  • Since 1994, Salzgitter Flachstahl has relied on SYNCROTESS as the central control system for its inplant logistics. What was once coordinated using paper lists, phone calls and radio communication is now managed through digital real-time dispatching across the entire inplant transport operation.
  • The system ensures smooth coordination and billing of transport orders while simplifying communication and coordination processes throughout the plant.

Real-Time Dispatching in 24/7 Operations

  • The plant operates around the clock, which means intralogistics management must be available at all times.
  • Today, SYNCROTESS manages transports across four different vehicle groups in real time and is fully integrated into Salzgitter Flachstahl’s business processes.

Continuous Development and New Requirements

  • With digital order entry and the first mobile devices, communication between the transport control center and drivers became significantly easier. Since the version upgrade in 2022, drivers have been using smartphones with the Site Logistics App to retrieve, process and confirm orders on the go.
  • Additional functions such as the digital shift log, which facilitates handovers in five-shift operations, smart winter services and new interfaces support the continuous networking of transport control.

Supporting Sustainable Transformation

  • By 2033, the steel manufacturer aims to reduce up to 95 percent of its CO₂ emissions. At the same time, transport performance continues to increase: from 2023 to 2024 alone, the number of completed transports rose by 7 percent, while fleet utilization increased by 12 percent. In addition, more than 1,800 employees can now create transport orders independently in the system.
  • Another important step for the future is the integration of autonomous transport systems into the software. Initial tests with driverless vehicles are already underway, although loads of 100 tons and more still present technological and safety-related challenges.
We deliberately chose INFORM back then because the solution was not only technologically state of the art, but also able to grow with us over the long term. Today, we can say that the system has become an integral part of our plant logistics – and our collaboration with INFORM has brought us exactly to where we are today.
Julian Altevogt, Head of Transport Control Center, Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH

The results:

  • Route and Time Optimization
Avoiding empty runs and executing transport orders more efficiently.
  • On-Time Supply
Reliable delivery of the required materials to plants and assembly areas.
  • More Efficient Use of Resources
Targeted deployment of available vehicles and resources.
  • Increased Transport Performance
The number of completed transports rose by 7 percent from 2023 to 2024.
  • Higher Fleet Utilization
Fleet utilization increased by 12 percent in the same period.
  • Reduced Workload for Dispatchers
More than 1,800 employees can create transport orders independently in the system.
  • Greater Transparency
Central traceability of all transport orders – from order entry to execution.
