Baggage Transport, Reinvented –
Fraport Partners with INFORM for Maximum Efficiency

Fraport began completely revamping its baggage transport system during the pandemic. In a multi-stage process spanning several years, the airport operator worked with INFORM to make its IT-supported planning and operational processes more flexible, efficient, and stable.

Fraport AG is one of the leading companies in the global airport business and active at 29 airports on four continents. It provides the full range of operational and management services relating to airside and terminal operations.

Fraport Ground Services GmbH is a wholly owned subsidiary and an indispensable part of the parent company. It plays a key role at Germany’s largest airport, where it is providing the entire range of aircraft ground handling services.

project 1 - The ChallEnge

With the drastic decline in passenger volume during the Corona pandemic, Fraport Ground Services (FGS) had to significantly reduce the process complexity in ground handling operations. Separate systems for baggage service, loading and unloading, and baggage transport caused high costs and a lack of flexibility. The drivers were assigned to inbound flights – no matter how often they had to drive to perform the tasks for each flight.

Within just three years, we have implemented three major projects with INFORM – with strategic consulting and careful integration of new solutions into the existing IT landscape. All of them were completed on time despite time constraints and have measurably stabilized our operationsand made them future-proof.

project 1 - the solution

Fraport used the crisis to streamline its IT landscape. The old baggage transport system has been taken out of service. Instead, baggage service, loading, and unloading were integrated into the existing Padilos 3 dispatching system. Drivers were assigned to single drives, leading to more efficiency.

The results from the first phase were analyzed to develop an action plan for the next step. A unique feature of Frankfurt Airport had to be taken into account: many positions and positioning areas on the apron are far from the buildings. This results in long travel times and long commitment times to a single task for both the loading groups and the baggage transporters.

RESULTS AT A GLANCE

  • Reduced complexity with an integrated system.
  • Cost reduction by decommissioning outdated solutions.
  • Flexible personnel deployment across trades.
