Success Story

Port of Piraeus digitizes vehicle terminal operations with INFORM

The Port of Piraeus, Greece’s largest port and a key hub for vehicle trade between Europe and Asia, is strengthening its strategic role by digitizing and optimizing car terminal operations. To increase efficiency, transparency, and capacity, the Piraeus Port Authority (PPA) relies on INFORM Yard and Workshop Management for vehicle terminals.

Challenge

As vehicle volumes continue to grow, the Port of Piraeus faces increasing operational complexity at its car terminal. Located close to the center of Athens and operating in a highly competitive international environment, PPA must ensure:

  • Efficient handling of large vehicle volumes
  • Short turnaround times for vessels and vehicles
  • Full transparency for OEMs, logistics partners, and authorities
  • Flexibility to introduce new business processes quickly

With a terminal area of more than 145,000 square meters and capacity for over 600,000 vehicle movements per year, manual coordination and fragmented systems were no longer sufficient to support future growth and competitiveness.

Solution

PPA decided to invest in an end-to-end digital solution from INFORM to manage and optimize all vehicle handling processes at its car terminal.

The solution provides:

  • Real-time transparency across all vehicle movements and terminal processes
  • Automated generation and optimization of work orders
  • Intelligent allocation of parking and storage spaces
  • Advanced planning and real-time optimization of operational workflows
  • Web-based access for customers, suppliers, logistics partners, and customs authorities

By applying digital decision making and real-time optimization, INFORM enables PPA to continuously improve terminal operations while maintaining flexibility for new services and process changes.

Results

With INFORM Yard & Workshop Management in place, the Port of Piraeus gains:

  • Improved efficiency and transparency of vehicle handling
  • Better utilization of terminal space and resources
  • Increased operational capacity without expanding the physical footprint
  • Real-time visibility for all stakeholders across the vehicle supply chain
  • A scalable digital foundation to support future growth

The solution positions the Port of Piraeus to further strengthen its role as a leading vehicle logistics hub in the eastern Mediterranean.

As part of this new collaboration, PPA aims to increase the efficiency and competitiveness of its car terminal and make it more attractive to its customers. We believe that INFORM's vehicle logistics system can guarantee the successful digital transformation of PPA's car terminal.

Future Outlook

By digitizing terminal operations, PPA is creating a future-ready platform for continued growth in vehicle volumes and service offerings. INFORM’s solution enables the port to continuously optimize processes, integrate new partners, and adapt quickly to changing market requirements in international vehicle logistics.

Conclusion

The partnership between Piraeus Port Authority and INFORM marks a significant advancement in the port’s vehicle logistics capabilities. By adopting cutting-edge digital solutions, PPA is set to improve efficiency, transparency, and customer satisfaction, solidifying its position as a strategic hub for international vehicle trade.
