Know-how-Boost FOR FELIOS: E-learning empowers mechanical engineers amid skilled labor shortages

Jan 9, 2025 Antje Middelberg

The skilled labor shortage in mechanical engineering is giving many companies a headache. Demographic change is the reason: 296,000 employees are expected to retire in the next ten years. That's about a quarter. Only around 118,000 skilled workers are expected to follow – leaving a potential gap of 178,000 qualified professionals, reports the German Economic Institute.

As a result, companies are increasingly looking to retain employees beyond retirement age. Digital solutions can also make mechanical engineering companies more efficient. This includes an AI-based production planning tool such as FELIOS from the Aachen-based software developer INFORM. However, digital tools like this are only effective when operated by well-trained staff. This is where our FELIOS Academy comes in. Accessible via our customer portal, the e-learning platform delivers targeted expertise and bridges training gaps.

Why our e-learning offering stands out

This offering is aimed at existing customers who want to refresh their knowledge and train new employees in a time-saving manner. New customers looking to train their teams will benefit as well. The focus is on FELIOS | APS for realistic production planning, as well as the modules FELIOS | PM for project and assembly planning, and FELIOS | SPE for intelligent shift planning. Our e-learning portfolio currently includes:

  • 50+ courses for FELIOS | APS alone – our Advanced Planning and Scheduling System
  • Around 20 courses for FELIOS | PM – our solution for project and assembly planning
  • 6 courses for FELIOS | SPE – our shift and workforce planning solution

E-learning offers companies and employees many advantages:

1. Flexible Access

  • Knowledge seekers can access the training sessions 24/7.

2. Individual learning

  • Content can be worked on at one's own pace.

3. Bilingual learning content

  • Core training is available in both German and English to meet global needs.

4. Adaptability to target groups

  • The content is tailored and offers basic training as well as specific key user content.

5. Diverse knowledge transfer

  • Know-how is conveyed through different formats:
    • Videos
    • Tutorials
    • Exercises
    • Expert interviews

6. Integration into everyday work

  • Training can be easily integrated into the daily workflow.

7. Testing knowledge

  • Through quizzes, the acquired knowledge can be independently tested.

8. Transparency in learning progress

  • Managers have an overview of which skills their teams have already acquired.

Simple. Efficient. Flexible.

The learning platform was launched in December 2019 with the establishment of a working group. " We quickly realized the added value of a digital training solution – especially during the COVID-19 crisis," explains Julia Schumacher from INFORM's technical editorial department.

Customer feedback has been consistently positive. "We continually update and develop our training platform – always with the goal of imparting knowledge simply, efficiently, and flexibly. This ensures that specialist knowledge is always available when needed."

Stop worrying about the skilled labor shortage – and start driving digital transformation with FELIOS and our e-learning platform.  Feel free to contact us for further information.
