Since 1817, Koenig & Bauer has been developing, designing, and manufacturing custom printing presses for virtually every application around the world.
To achieve this, the group relies on highly precise components – produced in-house by its own manufacturing service provider, Koenig & Bauer Industrial.
The company plans the production of its broad product range with varying batch sizes using the FELIOS advanced planning and scheduling (APS) system from INFORM. While switching to SAP, Koenig & Bauer Industrial implemented FELIOS centrally across multiple sites. The aim: to standardize the software landscape and streamline production planning across the board.
"Of course, no customer likes hearing that a delivery date can't be met. For us, transparency and communication with our internal stakeholders are essential. What we clarify face-to-face also needs to be visible in the system.“
For a long time, the company relied on target scheduling. In this approach, sequences and workloads are planned backward from a fixed target date by which the product is to be manufactured or delivered. The issue: this method made planning rigid and placed significant pressure on production. A shift began in 2018 with the ERP transition to SAP.
Together with the Würzburg plant, Koenig & Bauer Industrial decided to harmonize the software infrastructure and introduce a centralized detailed planning system across all sites to streamline operations.
Since implementing FELIOS, the company has significantly reduced lead times and increased transparency throughout the value chain.
At Koenig & Bauer Industrial, FELIOS acts as an extension to the existing SAP ERP system using standardized interfaces to transfer all relevant planning data.
Based on ERP data and real-time capacity availability, the software calculates production sequences to achieve the best overall result and then plays it back to the ERP system.
THE RESULT
“We let the software do the work – instead of constantly chasing after tasks. Communication flows are shorter, and we’re more efficient than ever.”
Anita Markowski, Scheduling and FELIOS Manager at Koenig & Bauer Industrial GmbH
